POKOTABI / Yaegaki
八重垣
Located in Nerima Ward's Sakuradai neighborhood, Yaegaki is a welcoming izakaya celebrated for its generous spread of homemade otoshi appetizer bowls. Pair a sake or Hoppy with hearty dishes for an easygoing afternoon or evening drink.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The moment you take a seat, you are greeted by an appetizer tray crowded with small bowls. Ranging from 4 to 5 items, these starters might feature seasonal simmered butterbur, gently braised pork cartilage, or garlic-accented chicken neck, offering shifting flavors with every bite that naturally encourage another sip of sake. Diners can ease into their drink of choice at an unhurried pace, whether that means a chilled pour of Asabiraki sake from Iwate, a glass of Kinmiya shochu, or shochu mixed with Hoppy.
Once the small bowls are finished, the kitchen turns out straightforward, comforting fare tailored from whatever fresh ingredients are on hand. Crisp fried seafood, pork loin cutlets, dried herring, and comforting plates of simmered daikon radish with satsuma-age fish cake frequently grace the tables, leading right up to a homestyle curry rice for the finish. Crafted by the friendly proprietor, the cooking creates a relaxed warmth that easily makes a short visit turn into a long, comfortable stay.
Tucked into a residential pocket of Sakuradai without an exterior sign, Yaegaki carries the understated air of a neighborhood retreat, yet opens its doors warmly to solo patrons and regulars alike. Operating from 12:00 noon until late into the night every day except Wednesday, it suits everything from an affordable chef's-choice lunch and daytime drinks to unhurried evening conversations. Note that payment is cash only, so be sure to bring yen notes and coins when stopping by.
